What Information Is Public in a Bankruptcy Filing?
Under 11 U.S.C. § 107, bankruptcy case papers and the court docket are generally public records, which limits the privacy of your filing. PACER, the federal courts’ electronic filing system, provides electronic access to federal court records, including bankruptcy case records. A bankruptcy petition and related schedules can reveal your financial details, including:
- Creditors
- Property
- Income
- Debts
The docket may also show important case developments, such as the filing date and whether the court entered a discharge. Public access does not mean that someone in your personal or professional life automatically receives notice of the bankruptcy; they generally must search for your case or otherwise learn that it exists.
How Bankruptcy Protects Personal Information
Federal Rule of Bankruptcy Procedure 9037 restricts disclosure of certain personal identifiers. Filings show only the last four digits of your Social Security or taxpayer identification number, while financial account numbers also appear only in part. A filing generally shows only the year of your birth and uses initials for a minor.
These safeguards provide some privacy for bankruptcy filings by reducing the exposure of sensitive identifying information, but they do not make the entire case confidential. When you submit documents, you generally bear responsibility for proper redaction, so careful filing is important.

Bankruptcy courts can protect the privacy of information in a filing by restricting access in limited circumstances. They may also issue protective orders when appropriate.
A court does not automatically grant your request to seal information simply because financial details are personal. Whether the court may restrict public access depends on the nature of the information and the circumstances involved.
